How to change the oil in a compressor?

Compressor oil is designed to quickly release air and help prevent foaming for maximum protection. Oil-lubricated air compressors are a popular choice because they have a longer product life than their oil-free counterparts. This means they need to be serviced regularly, just like a car engine. Changing the oil in your air compressor is critical not only for the product's longevity but also for the machine's efficiency.

Here are the steps on how to change the oil in a compressor:

  1. While it may appear to be a no-brainer, first ensure that your compressor uses oil. Some smaller portable compressors are classified as "oilless," meaning they do not use oil.

  2. Once you've determined that your compressor requires oil, look for the owner's manual and any special oil-change instructions provided by the manufacturer. Make a note of the type of compressor oil to use and make sure you have enough on hand. Most compressors only require about a quart of compressor oil.

  3. Find the oil-fill cap, the sight glass, and the drain plug. On some models, the sight glass also serves as the drain plug. Components are usually accessible, but if they aren't, remove any shrouds or other components that are in the way.

  4. Run the compressor for a few minutes before draining the oil. This warms the oil, allowing it to flow more easily and aiding in the removal of contaminants that may have settled in the oil sump.

  5. Drain the old oil by placing a catch can or drain pan beneath the drain plug. In some models, the drain plug may be positioned in an inconvenient location that prevents a drain pan from being placed directly underneath. To direct the old oil into the pan, use a small funnel, a piece of metal, or another device.

  6. Examine the old oil for contaminants like metal particles. In addition, look for a milky color, which indicates moisture. This alerts you to potential issues that may need to be addressed.

  7. Examine the drain plug O-ring and replace it if it is nicked or deformed. Using a clean rag, wipe the drain plug and drain-plug opening. Replace the plug and torque it to the specifications specified in your owner's manual. If you don't know the exact measurements, snug it up and avoid over-tightening.

  8. After that, remove the fill cap and replace the compressor oil with the proper amount. Determine the proper fill level with the sight glass. As previously stated, most home compressors only require a pint or two of oil, so you won't need to add much.

  9. You're finished when you replace the fill cap. That's all there is to it when it comes to changing compressor oil.
