Everything you wanted to know about automotive Lubricants

Lubricants play a major role in controlling the friction in the engine. They protect the engine from rusting and help in cooling the pistons. They also protect the engine oil stored from combustion gases. They broadly fall into two categories - monograde and multigrade – depending on whether their viscosity changes significantly with temperature or not. The viscosity grade of a multigrade oil is different at high and low temperatures due to additives known as viscosity modifiers.

Automotive Lubricants

Lubricants are remarkable fluids and essential in modern life.  To have a better running of car engines and gearboxes, the oil and greases should be good. Most of the lubricants are petrol-based. It is necessary to change your oil as per the schedule to avoid contamination of oil. Proper lubrication provides the best protection. It is very useful to clean and prevent metal parts from corrosion and rust. It maximizes your engine’s life and reduces vehicular emissions. Lubricating oil should be changed often for best results, as recommended by the machine/vehicle manufacturer. Here are few things you need to know about automotive lubricants:

  • Lubricants help the wheels to go around and CO2 go down which means vehicles can run efficiently by increasing the fuel economy.

  • Synthetic oil provides better performance and protection than conventional oil. They help in keeping engines cleaner and provide longer engine wear protection.

  • Without proper lubrication, the wind turbines can’t spin. So, they also help in generating wind energy.

  • The color of the grease doesn’t matter. Different colors are used by manufacturers in different parts of the same machine but it will function the same. It is just used to help the operator distinguish from one product to other.

  • Lubricants won't separate from moving parts during a system because it helps in reduction of friction, reduces heat generation, operation noise and vibrations.

  • Hydraulic fluids are used as the working fluid to transmit power. Hydraulic fluids comprise an outsized portion of all lubricants produced within the world.

  • It becomes less effective over a time of constant exposure to heat, moisture, and air lead to oxidation.
